If you’ve ever taken a probability course, you remember The Fear.

The Fear sets in the moment you realize the Probability Density Function (PDF) of the Normal Distribution involves:

\(e^{-x^2}\)

You look at that exponent, you look at the integral sign, and you realize that function has no elementary antiderivative.

Calculating the Moments—the mean (E[X]), variance (E[X^2]), and kurtosis (E[X^4])—usually means rolling up your sleeves for three pages of Integration by Parts. It is messy. It is painful. It is prone to sign errors.

But what if I told you that you never actually have to integrate?

Hidden inside the Gaussian distribution is a recursive “engine”—a simple algebraic ladder. If you know where you are standing (n) and where you just came from (n-1), you can instantly calculate where you are going (n+1).

Let’s crack open the Bell Curve and look at the gears.
